Is Your Outside Water Feature
Bringing You Money or Draining It Away?
by P.K. Odle, The Feng Shui Advantage
You don’t have to believe that the location of your WATER feature (an uncovered pool, hot tub, pond or fountain) can cause you to loose money. But it does! This isn’t a ‘New Age’ intuitive method of gauging whether the location of your water feature is harmful or beneficial to your prosperity. Classical Feng Shui practitioners have determined when a direction is financially good or bad to have a water feature; since before paper was invented by the Chinese in 105 A.D.
Centuries before paper existed, the Emperor of China controlled the use of the environmental science of Classical Feng Shui. It wasn’t until 907 A.D. that the first Feng Shui Master was able to escape from the Emperor’s palace with his knowledge and his life. He secretly became know across China as ‘Yang Saves the Poor,’ because he lived in hiding to avoid being executed by the Emperor.
Like it’s sister science Acupuncture, Feng Shui has a 5,000 year history of managing environmental influences on your finances, health and relationships. There are no one-size-fits-all situations in Acupuncture or Classical Feng Shui. I refer to it as Classical Feng Shui, because I only practice, teach and write about time-tested scientific methods (repeatable circumstances with the same outcome). These are not to be confused with any ‘Folk-Beliefs’ passed down for generations that have grown in popularity thanks to so many do-it-yourself books.
With his famous equation E=mc2, Albert Einstein proved that when you come right down to it everything in the universe is energy. The Chinese word for this universal energy is Qi. On several levels the science of Feng Shui works with the movement of Qi.
‘Wind Water’ is the direct translation of Feng Shui. Wind and water currents both move Qi, which explains way a science that uses the 5 elements (water, wood, fire, earth and metal) as remedies is named Feng Shui (wind water).
In Classical Feng Shui, wind currents from fast moving traffic or wind whipping down a steep hill… reduces the Qi in your environment, which reduces your prosperity. The way to remedy this is to block the Qi from being swept away by swift moving air currents with a solid barrier, such as; thick bushes, a solid fence or even plexi-glass added to an open fence.
The affects of water on your prosperity are a bit more complex an issue than the affects of air currents. There are many factors to consider when determining where the optimum location is to install an outside water feature. The foremost remedy for any building in Classical Feng Shui is to “Fix the House Type,” which is determined from 216 possible energy blueprints created according to when a building was built and it’s exact 15° orientation. To be certain if and where water is necessary to “Fix your House Type” requires an on-site analysis by a Feng Shui professional trained in Classical Feng Shui. To learn more about the affects of living in the different House Types read my archived article… http://www.FengShuiAdvantage.com/articles/5FengShuiHouseTypes.htm
Here are a few general factors that pertain to the effectiveness of a water feature:
- The amount of water relative to the size of the building. The larger the building or unit the more water is necessary to affect the building’s Qi. For instance, a 10 gallon fountain on the patio or balcony of a small apartment is large enough for the size of the unit. Where as a 2,000 square foot house with 2 stories would need at least a 40 gallon fountain close to the house to affect the prosperity of the occupants. However, to “Fix your House Type” would require a much larger volume of water.
- How close to the building is the water feature? The farther away from the building the less your prosperity will be influenced. You and the building must be able to experience the sensation of water outside of it or it isn’t close enough to affect the Qi of the building.
- Whether the water is covered. When your pool or hot tub is covered the water is not interacting with the Qi and has no affect on your prosperity. If you build a solid roof over your water feature, it’s like putting the water inside the mountain and it will not affect your prosperity.
- How much is the water moving? The more the water is circulating the more affect it has on your prosperity. You want to be able to hear the pleasing sound of moving water through an open window or door. That lets you know the water is close enough and has enough movement to affect the Qi.
- Whether the water is clean or dirty. It is very important to keep the water clean, because it’s been proven that dirty water brings disasters, especially financial disasters. Also, mosquitoes love to breed in still, dirty water.
Classical Feng Shui uses the Chinese SOLAR calendar that begins on the 4th or 5th of February each year, which is the half-way point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. That is also the date when you need to make your annual adjustment to your inside remedies to compensate for the affects of the annual universal energy shift. To learn why updating your Feng Shui remedies is the most important New Year’s resolution you can keep… read this article:

However, it’s the 20 year construction cycles of Classical Feng Shui that determine which directions are good or bad when it comes to your money. I can assure you that from February 4, 2004 up to February 4, 2024 water in the NE direction from the magnetic center of your house will reduce your money. If you have an existing pool or hot tub in the NE you can limit its negative affect on your finances by keeping it covered when not in use.
During the same time period, which is referred to in Classical Feng Shui as Cycle 8… the two locations where an outside water feature will enhance your prosperity are the Southwest and East directions from the magnetic center of your home or office.
Which way the water is flowing doesn’t matter when dealing with any man-made water feature, because it’s the same water simply re-circulating over and over again. However, the direction water is flowing toward your building from a natural source does matter, but that’s an entirely different subject.
