On-Site vs. Long Distance...

Often times I’m asked to perform a long distance Feng Shui analysis of a property or building. To which I would like to reply... “Do you realize that’s like asking your eye doctor to write an accurate prescription without performing a complete eye exam in his office?” If you’re like most people, you may think Feng Shui is merely about furniture placement and decor. Feng Shui is actually a sister science to Acupuncture and they both have a 5,000 year history of improving people’s lives. Just as an Acupuncturist wouldn’t listen to your symptoms over the phone or look at pictures of you to determine where you should needle yourself... there are dangers in following long distance or one-size-fits-all Feng Shui advice.
Many of you already know about the negative influences of exposed beams, angles, stairs in line with your entrance and T-intersections coming directly toward your house, which are discussed in almost every Feng Shui book. In fact there are at least 47 visible environmental influences that could be overlooked when relying on photos or verbal descriptions in a long distance consultation. These could be as simple as a steep slope on your property and/or 2 openings (doors/windows) in-line with each other which both cause you to lose Qi/energy... which takes your prosperity with it. However, there are very few consultants that are aware of the more unusual Feng Shui influences, such as; a bathroom at the top of stairs that are directly in line with the entrance and what specific health problem that combination causes.
What you can see is just the tip of the Feng Shui iceberg and you know what’s below the surface on an actual iceberg… is more dangerous than what’s visible. The same is true in Feng Shui. What you can’t see are how you’re being influenced by your Personal Directions... as well as the inherent energies in each section of your home/office. For instance every building has at least 2 sections with energies that contribute to Delays, Fires, Accidents, Pain and Illness.
The 9 equal energy sections in your home/office are identified by dividing the interior width and depth of your home/office, which is only one of the reasons an exact proportional floor plan is required. The energies that affect your life the most are at your entrances and anywhere you spend the most time, such as; your bedroom, office and family room. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a perfect Feng Shui building, because all buildings have both sabotaging and supportive energy combinations… including some energies that vary from year to year, which are called the Visiting or Annual Energy. This explains why one year can be better or worse for you in the same home/office even when you haven’t changed a thing.
Your home/office’s invisible energy patterns were created when your building/unit was built and according to its exact 15° magnetic compass orientation, which at times can be difficult to determine. When working long distance your consultant must assume they were given the correct compass reading, floor plan and detailed environmental description. Case in point, I’ve personally preformed on-site consultations for several students who had incorrectly read the orientation of their own homes and therefore were using the incorrect remedies. To put it mildly… there’s just too much margin for errors, which is why I avoid doing long distance consultations.
Unlike the do-it-yourself books would have you believe… remedies are not based on the compass directions of each part of your home/office. Time-tested systematic calculations use the exact compass reading and construction dates to reveal where and which elemental remedies are necessary to neutralize your home/office’s sabotaging energy patterns and enhance their supportive energy patterns. In other words, just because Fire is associated with the “hot” South direction it doesn’t mean that Fire colored decorations in the South section of your home/office aren’t doing you more harm than good, such as contributing to gossip, arguments and legal problems.
Keep in mind... that all remedies must be out where the air currents can come in contact with them or they will not affect the Qi/energy in the area. After all Feng Shui translated is Wind Water, which both have currents that move Qi (the life force energy of the Universe.) It’s vital that your remedies blend with your décor to avoid creating a SHA or negative affect. Remember, the purpose of all Feng Shui remedies is to create a supportive, harmonious environment where you can thrive.
The personal aspects of Feng Shui are the most secret part of a Classical Feng Shui analysis and I’m not referring to your general Trigram or Kua related 45° directions. Actually, barely 5% of consultants world-wide can determine ALL of your precise 15° Personal Directions according to your date of birth and gender. For instance the 15° direction that would cause you to sleep alone (aka Lonely Pillow direction) could be the direction that brings your spouse more referrals (aka Valued Friends direction) when your house is oriented in that exact 15° compass direction. On the other hand… the direction that brings you more income (aka Prosperous direction) could be your child’s Consuming direction, which would continuously drain your saving account if anyone in your household was using a door or window in that precise 15° direction from the magnetic center of your home/office. These directions are yet another reason why an on-site inspection of the building is required, along with an accurate floor plan which includes the exact size and placement of all doors and windows.
When investing in a Feng Shui consultation, be sure the consultant insists on conducting an on-site evaluation... and that they work with the 5 elements as the remedies for your home/office’s inherent energies. In addition, make sure they’ll at least factor in the location of ALL 9 of your Personal 15° Directions in your current home/office.
I find that most clients need additional guidance to be certain that they’ve implemented their required remedies correctly, so you’ll want to inquire if follow-up questions are included in the price of the consultations. Since, your remedies will usually need to be adjusted from year to year to avoid future problems... ask if they offer annual updates at a reasonable rate.
